New book soon to launch!!

Well my new book, FADING INTO FOCUS is about to be birthed.  I'm looking at mid February.  This book is a memoir in verse about my relationship with my mother and th experience of dealing with her descent into dementia.  It is ultimately a work of love and peace and a very candid collection that follows my imperfect journey toward forgiveness of both her and myself.  I'm hopeful that the honesty in which I express my feelings will be helpful to others struggling with similar issues of aging parents, Alzheimer's or other illnesses, grief, difficult relationships etc.

Just finished a poem for an ekphrastic cement at ArtSpace in Hartford.  That poem has been "finished" at least five times!!  I had lots of fun playing with different line breaks an also making the poem very visual.  I just love this writing thing so much; it never gets boring because there's always a way to challenge yourself.

amazing art

Went to Chesterfield yesterday to visit Daniel Chester French's studio.  I've always felt that the hands of his sculpture of his Lincoln Memorial sculpture, are the most important feature.  In the studio, there was a row of sculpted hands hanging on the wall and they were so expressive that I got the  shivers.  Inspiration for another poem!

Another little tidbit of information for art lovers; there's a fabulous glass art gallery called Schatz's in Stockbridge on Elm Street behind the bank, a bit hidden but well worth the trouble.  Half of the pieces in the gallery had just been on display at NBMAA in their recent art glass show.

ekphrasis --RAW

Thrilled to have had the inspiration of Gary Jacobs's painting, Acceptance, for my newest poem, The Colors of Hope.  Looking forward to sharing everyone's visual art and poetry at the RAW ephrastic event in early November!

White Memorial Wonder

Had the most delightful poetry/nature experience a couple of weeks ago at White Memorial.  Read some of my nature poems in front of a roaring fire, while sitting in a comfy chair, my feet up on a log and a table and lamp right beside me , as the crickets chirped along.  Then had the pleasure of listening to Gerri Griswold read Mary Oliver with such enthusiasm that all around the campfire were riveted.  It doesn't get much better than this!  Thank you Gerri for having me.

new book

Well it's been a very long time but I'm back and with a newfound commitment to be consistent in posting on this  blog!  Since my last post, there has been much writing, many readings and the completion of my second collection, FADING INTO FOCUS, which will be published in the near future.  It is a memoir in verse about a mother daughter relationship and the impact of Alzheimer's Disease.  Sounds pretty heavy but it's all about awareness and forgiveness.  Looking forward to sharing with the world!

art inspires poetry

I've been fortunate lately to have viewed some amazing artwork.
I also got to meet the artists, which was an extraordinary experience, especially since they were so down to earth and thrilled that we appreciated their work.  I strongly recommend getting down to Chelsea to see the glass and metal "sculptures" of Michael Glancy at the Friedman Gallery and to see the black on black paintings of Karen Gunderson at The Clamp(on) Gallery.

The following was inspired by the work of the same name by Asheville artist Joyce Thornburg:

Writing Poetry

As this is my first post, please be assured that I have no intention of trying to bore you to death and that, in the future, my entries will be much more brief.
I would like to use this blog as a place to share poems and thoughts about poetry, inspiration and creativity in general, both mine and yours.
There is much power in simplicity and, in my poetry, I work to capture moments of emotion and awareness directly and succinctly. Though the first draft usually comes quite easily for me, I spend a great deal of time crafting and paring down the language.
